IS BIGGER BETTER?

Shopping for a new washing machine? With so many different sizes on the market, which one is right for you? If you have a large family and need to wash clothes often, then a 9kg is definitely the one for you. Of course bigger isn’t always better as the bigger your appliance, the more water, energy and money you will use running it; this is no good if you are washing a couple of sets of work clothes, gym kit and weekend outfits for one every week.

For smaller families, couples or single professionals a large washing machine could leave you waiting days to fill the drum; this is no good when you need fresh clothes today! Take a look at our washing capacity guide to find out what will work best for you…

General guide for clothes capacity

1 kg of washing machine capacity is equivalent to 5 t-shirts

Typical load 6kg – small towels x5, lightweight tops x6, trousers x2, pairs of socks x10, bed sheets x2, pillowcases x2

7kg – small towels x5, lightweight tops x10, trousers x4, pairs of socks x20, bed sheets x2, pillowcases x2

9kg – small towels x6, lightweight tops x12, trousers x5, pairs of socks x22, bed sheets x2, pillowcases x2

General guide for bedding capacity

Household bedding and duvets can be washed in your washing machine. In fact it is recommended that you wash them every 3 months. If you have a stain on a duvet then move the feathers away from that area of the blanket, treat the stain and wash according to the instructions.

A 5 kg drum will accommodate sheets and towels for an individual or a household of two people.

A 6 kg drum will hold a single duvet.

A 7 kg drum can wash a double duvet or the towels and sheets for a small family.

An 8 kg drum can wash a queen or a lightweight size duvet. This is suitable for a medium size family.

A 9 kg machine can wash a whole king size duvet and is the best option for large families.

Top tips

A teaspoon of salt added to your wash will help to stop bright colours fading!

Make sure you turn jeans inside out before washing to prevent fading.

Consider using 2 laundry baskets, one for lights and another for darks, to save you time on wash day.

Want to keep black clothing black, instead of watching it fade to grey? Add a cup of brewed and cooled tea or coffee to the rinse cycle.
